Ovarian Vein Embolization

Ovarian vein embolization is performed by one of Imaging Healthcare Specialists subspecialty trained interventional radiologists using image guidance and a catheter to seal off the faulty veins from the inside.

This shrinks the veins and reduces the symptoms they are causing. During the procedure at one of our 10 San Diego area outpatient imaging centers, a catheter is inserted into the blood vessels in the pelvis and small metal coils are inserted to seal the faulty vein. For smaller varicose veins, a special foam agent may be used to shrink the vein.

Like UFE, ovarian vein embolization at our San Diego imaging center is a safe and effective outpatient procedure that is an effective alternative to open surgery. According to the Society for Interventional Radiology, ovarian vein embolization is effective at providing relief for about 80% of those who undergo the procedure. The procedure requires no hospital stay, and patients can return to work the following day.
